Popular Destinations in Costa Rica

San Jose

A city full of charm, San Jose isn't always on everyone's list when visiting, but dig deep and discover this bustling city's hidden magic.

Explore the historic neighbourhood of Barrio Amon, where old mansions have been converted into gorgeous contemporary art galleries.

Shop with the locals at a Saturday Farmer's Market, gather ingredients to make a traditional Costa Rican dish, or visit a top restaurant if you don't fancy doing the work yourself.

Monteverde

Maintained and committed to preserving this beautiful forest, Monteverde is one of the prettiest places to visit on the planet. High-rise bridges allow you to be amongst the trees and wildlife.

This is called the 'cloud forest'. The Monteverde area is chock full of agricultural excellence, so lend a hand on the farm and get stuck in!

Tamarindo

Known for its laid-back surfing vibe, Tamarindo is a village on the Costa Rican coast that offers some incredible beaches, such as Playa Tamarindo and Playa Blanca.

Playa Blanca is a refuge and nesting site for giant Leatherback Turtles and forms part of Las Baulas National Marine Park—a must-visit for Costa Rican holidaymakers.

There is also the Tamarindo Wildlife Refuge, which protects animals such as howler monkeys and crocodiles.

Travel Risks in Costa Rica

Costa Rica is moderately safe. There is a medium risk of petty crime, including pickpocketing, bag snatching, and mugging.

Keep your belongings on you at all times, on the front of your person, and never carry large amounts of cash or expensive valuables on you.

Natural Disasters such as flooding and landslides can occur in Costa Rica, so be aware before visiting.

Taxi drivers often try to scam you by overcharging; try not to get into a taxi without a visible meter. If you have to, they agree on a price before getting into the vehicle.
