What is Ball Hockey?

Ball Hockey is a team sport, a variation of the sport of Ice Hockey, and a specific interpretation of the game of Field Hockey.

The Surface: The game is usually played on a hard surface, not an ice or grass surface,  commonly on a 200 x 85-foot rink.

The Teams: Five players on each team, all playing different roles as part of the team, for example, a Goal Tender, Left and Right Winger, Centre, Left and Right Defense, usually played in organised leagues.

The Player's Equipment: An orange ball is used instead of a hockey puck, and the sticks are more similar to Ice Hockey sticks than Field Hockey; you also wear very similar protective equipment to Ice Hockey, such as helmets, gloves, and shin pads.

Here are the key differences between the three different forms of Hockey.

Components of the Game Ball Hockey Ice Hockey Field Hockey
Surface Hard Surface Ice Rink Grass Field
Ball/Puck Plastic Ball Rubber Puck Hard Ball
Stick Plastic Stick Curved Stick Wooden Stick
Pace Slow Fast Moderate
Protective Equipment Required Required Required
