Choosing Your Destination

  • Skill Level: Be honest about your kayaking experience. Unlike rafting, you will be in control of your vessel. Start with Class II or III rapids if you are a beginner. As you progress, Class IV and V offer serious challenges for experts.
  • Solo vs. Group: Some kayakers prefer a solo experience, but beginners might consider a guided trip for safety and learning purposes.
  • Locations: Popular destinations include: North America, Europe, Asia and New Zealand.

Planning and Preparation

  • Training:  Don't underestimate the physical demands. Build upper body strength, and stamina, and practice essential kayaking skills like rolling and bracing in calm water before hitting the rapids.
  • Outfitters: Choose a reputable company with experienced guides who cater to kayakers, especially beginners. They can provide necessary gear rentals and safety briefings.
  • Gear: Proper gear is crucial. You will need a white water kayak, helmet, life jacket, paddle, spray skirt( to keep water out of the cockpit), and personal flotation device (PFD). Dress in layers of quick-drying thermals and a suit for colder waters.
  • Packing: Pack essentials like sunscreen, sunglasses, a hat, a waterproof container for valuables, and comfortable footwear for walking on uneven terrain. Check the weather forecast and pack accordingly.

Safety on the Water

  • Guiding: A guided trip with experienced instructors is highly recommended especially for beginners. They can assess your skills, teach proper techniques and prioritise safety.
  • Scouting & Teamwork: Always scout rapids beforehand (if possible) and plan your route. For more challenging sections, consider running them with a group for safety and support.
  • Respect the River: White water kayaking demands respect for the power of the water. Never kayak alone at your skill level and be aware of hazards like rocks and strainers (underwater obstacles.
  • Safety Measures: Always wear your life jacket properly. Know basic water rescue techniques like self-rescue and buddy rescue. Be prepared to swim in cold water if needed.
