Three Peaks Challenge Travel Insurance FAQs
9Taking on Ben Nevis, Scafell Pike and Yr Wyddfa (Snowdon)? Here's the honest guide to insuring the Three Peaks Challenge — including what you genuinely don't need to insure - Get a Quote
1. Do I really need travel insurance for the Three Peaks — it's in the UK?
Not for the reasons most people assume — and we'd rather tell you that straight.
Your medical treatment is covered by the NHS, and mountain rescue in the UK is provided free of charge by volunteer teams (funded by donations — worth making one).
What travel insurance actually protects on a Three Peaks trip
- is your money and your kit:
-cancellation or curtailment cover if illness or injury stops you going or forces you home early, -personal possessions, and your activity equipment.
For a challenge that's often months of planning, fundraising, booked transport and accommodation, that's what's genuinely at risk.
2. Is mountain rescue free in the UK? What about helicopters?
Yes — the mountain rescue teams covering all three peaks (Lochaber for Ben Nevis, Wasdale for Scafell Pike, Llanberis for Yr Wyddfa) are volunteer organisations that never charge for rescue,
Search-and-rescue helicopters are operated by HM Coastguard at no cost to the casualty.
That's very different from the Alps or the Himalaya, where rescue can cost tens of thousands — it's why UK challenge cover is priced the way it is.
If a team turns out for you, the right response is a donation, not a claim.
3. So what does the policy actually cover?
Three things that matter on this trip:
-
cancellation or curtailment (Gold and Platinum) — if you're injured or fall ill before or during the challenge, your pre-paid accommodation, transport and unused costs are protected;
-
your personal possessions; and
-
3. your activity equipment — boots, packs, poles, technical clothing — to £1,500 [→ £2,000 from 1 Aug], including in transit. What you're not paying for is medical and rescue cover you don't need in the UK.
4. Is there a catch — any conditions for UK trips?
One important one: UK trips only qualify for cover when you have at least 2 nights of pre-booked accommodation. A pure 24-hour dash with no booked nights doesn't count as a trip the policy recognises — so book your accommodation (the night before Ben Nevis and after Yr Wyddfa is the natural pattern) before you buy, and keep the confirmations.
Most organised challenges include this anyway.
5. My bank account / existing policy includes travel insurance — aren't I already covered?
Check two things before relying on it: does it cover trekking up to 2,000 metres, and does it cover the activity as the sole purpose of the trip?
Many packaged-account policies treat activities as incidental — a walk that happens on holiday — and a trip whose entire purpose is climbing three mountains in 24 hours may sit outside that. If the wording is vague, that's what our policy is for.
6. Which activity do I select — is the Three Peaks hiking or trekking?
For insurance purposes the word doesn't matter, the height does: select trekking up to 2,000 metres and all three peaks are comfortably inside it — Ben Nevis, the highest, is 1,345m.
The same selection covers your training walks on other UK hills during the trip.
7. Can you cover a charity or corporate team?
Yes — group policies are our bread and butter for the Three Peaks, and it's often the cheapest way to do it. Email your dates and traveller count to support@jsinsurance.co.uk or quote online.
For school and youth groups, we cover organised trips with one adult per 10 children. - Get a Quote
8. What if the weather forces us to abandon a peak?
Be honest with yourselves about conditions — the teams that get rescued are usually the ones that pushed on.
Insurance-wise: choosing not to climb because of weather isn't a claimable event (disinclination is excluded on every travel policy), but if the trip is cut short by injury or illness, curtailment cover responds.
Plan a weather buffer day if your schedule allows.
9. Does the policy cover the driving between peaks?
Your possessions and equipment are covered throughout the trip, including in the vehicle overnight subject to the policy's unattended-vehicle conditions (locked, out of sight, evidence of forced entry — and note baggage in an unattended vehicle overnight is not covered, so bring kit indoors).
The vehicle itself and driving risks are motor insurance territory, not travel — and our practical advice matches every organiser's: use dedicated drivers who aren't climbing. Fatigue is the biggest genuine danger of the 24-hour format.
10. Winter Three Peaks — are we covered with crampons and ice axes?
The standard challenge season is April to October.
A winter round is a different undertaking — if your plans involve crampons and ice axes, this becomes mountaineering and needs this added to the Policy . The premium will be higher
11. Are there age restrictions?
All insured persons must be under 66 when the policy is purchased. Many Three Peaks teams span generations — for members 66 or over, contact us about our Adventures policy (up to age 75).
