Cover for paragliding

1. What's the difference between Travel Plus and Adventures?

Travel Plus is our standard route for paragliding: a full travel insurance policy with paragliding added via Activity Pack 4, bought before you leave the UK, covering your whole trip.

Adventures is the specialist alternative we use when Travel Plus doesn't fit: it can cover just the days you're flying (top-up alongside insurance you already hold), can be bought after you've departed, and offers Search & Rescue cover to £50,000, which Travel Plus doesn't have.

Paragliding is Europe-only on both. Not sure which fits your trip? Call us on 0800 043 0020 or email support@jsinsurance.co.uk and we'll quote the right one

2. Do you cover paragliding?

Yes — paragliding (including parapenting and paraponting) is covered on Travel Plus under Activity Pack 4, for an extra premium.

The pack you've chosen is shown on your policy schedule.

Cover applies in Europe only,

and two important limits apply: there is no Personal accident cover and no Personal liability cover for Activity Pack 4 activities. Get a Quote

3. Does the policy include paragliding? / Is paragliding covered under Activity Pack 4?

Paragliding isn't included as standard — Activity Pack 1 comes with the policy automatically, and paragliding sits in Activity Pack 4, which you add for an extra premium.

If Pack 4 is shown on your policy schedule, you're covered; if it isn't, you're not covered for paragliding. To add Pack 4 to an existing policy, Email or call us on 0800 043 0020.

4. Can I insure just the days I'm paragliding?

Yes — on our Adventures policy, cover can be arranged for just the days you're flying (top up cover ) rather than the whole trip - Get a Quote

Be aware this often ends up more expensive than adding Activity Pack 4 to a Travel Plus policy covering the full trip, so it's worth comparing both. Get a Quote

Email or Call us on 0800 043 0020 and we'll quote both ways.

5. Does the paragliding policy include normal travel insurance too?

Yes — this isn't an activity-only bolt-on. Travel Plus is a full travel insurance policy (emergency medical, cancellation and curtailment, baggage, delays, personal money and so on), and Activity Pack 4 extends it to cover paragliding.

Anything that happens on the trip when you're not flying — illness, a lost bag, a delayed flight — is covered under the normal policy sections, including Personal accident and Personal liability, whose Pack 4 restrictions only apply to claims arising from the activities themselves.

6. Are paragliding courses or lessons covered? What if I'm a complete beginner?

Yes — you don't need to be qualified or experienced for paragliding cover to apply, so learning to fly on a SIV (simulated incident) training course or with a school is covered the same as recreational flying.

You will be covered for pre paid course fees in the event of curtailment of the course. You need to purchase Part A and B of the Adventures Policy

7. Can I combine paragliding with skiing or other sports on one policy?

Yes — the winter sports extension can be added alongside Activity Pack 4 on the same policy, so a trip (or an annual policy) covering both skiing and paragliding is fine.

Other activities are covered according to the activity pack shown on your schedule — tell us everything you're planning when you get your quote so the right pack is applied. Email or Call 0800 043 0020.

8. Is it just leisure paragliding you cover?

No — recreational flying and amateur competitions can both be covered (see the competitions answer below).

What isn't covered is flying professionally — broadly, where you're paid to take part or receive sponsorship, fees or prize money over £500 - Get a Quote

9. Can you cover paragliding if it's not the sole purpose of my trip? What about if it is?

Either way is fine. Once Activity Pack 4 is on your policy, you're covered for paragliding whether it's the whole point of the trip or just one day of it — the policy doesn't restrict how much of the trip is spent flying.

Is there a limit on the number of days I can paraglide? No — unlike winter sports  there's no day limit on paragliding. You're covered for the duration of any insured trip.

Where you're covered

1. Does paragliding cover apply worldwide?

No — paragliding is covered in Europe only - Get a Quote

2. Does this cover paragliding in Turkey?

Yes — Turkey is included in the policy's definition of Europe (Destination Area 1), so paragliding in Turkey is covered provided Activity Pack 4 is on your policy. The same goes for Morocco and Tunisia, which are also in Destination Area 1.

3. Can I get paragliding cover if I'm already abroad?

Not on Travel Plus — it must be bought before you leave the UK, as all trips have to begin and end in your home country.

On our Adventures policy, though, you can buy cover after you've already departed, so if you're abroad and want paragliding cover Get a Quote or email or call us on 0800 043 0020. Note that annual multi-trip policies can't be renewed while you're away.

Medical, rescue and repatriation

1. Am I covered for medical expenses if I have an accident while paragliding?

Yes — with Activity Pack 4 on your policy, a paragliding accident is treated like any other injury under Section 2 (Emergency medical, repatriation and other expenses), with cover up to £10,000,000 outside your home country.

In a medical emergency, you (or someone with you) must contact the 24-hour medical assistance team as soon as possible.

2. Do you cover repatriation if I get injured paragliding?

Yes — repatriation is part of the Section 2 emergency medical cover to £10m. If it's medically necessary to bring you home, the costs of air transport (or other suitable means, including qualified attendants) are covered, provided it's pre-authorised by the medical assistance team.

3. Does the policy cover search and rescue / helicopter rescue?

There's no standalone search and rescue benefit. What is covered, under Section 2, is emergency rescue as part of your medical treatment — ambulance and air ambulance (including helicopter evacuation) where medically necessary. So if you're injured and need to be airlifted to hospital, that's covered; the cost of a search operation to locate you is not.

We can cover specific Search and rescue cover to £50,000 through Adventures

4. Does Activity Pack 4 include Personal accident cover?

No — there is no cover under Section 4 (Personal accident) for claims arising from paragliding.

That means the lump-sum benefits for accidental death, loss of limb/sight or permanent total disablement don't apply to paragliding claims. Your emergency medical cover (Section 2) is unaffected.

NB: do not confuse this with medical cover , you are still covered for all Emergecny medical expenses

5. Can I get paragliding insurance without quoting my medical history?

No — you'll need to tell us about pre-existing medical conditions when you buy. Conditions on the policy's Accepted Conditions list (kept stable and well controlled for 2 years) are covered automatically;

Anything else needs to be declared and agreed, otherwise claims related to it aren't covered under the cancellation, emergency medical, personal accident or cruise sections. You must also be a UK resident, aged 75 or under, and registered with a GP.

Liability and equipment

1. Is personal liability covered for paragliding?

No — there is no cover under Section 11 (Personal liability) for any claim that happens as a result of taking part in an Activity Pack 4 activity, including paragliding.

If you injure someone or damage property while flying, this policy won't respond. If you need third-party liability, a flying association membership (such as BHPA) that includes it is worth considering.

2. Is my paraglider/wing insured under the policy?

Partly. Your paraglider counts as sports equipment under Section 8 (Personal effects), which covers loss, theft or damage whilst not in use — up to £500.

There's no cover for damage that happens while you're flying, and £500 is likely to be well below the value of a wing, so specialist equipment insurance is worth considering for the kit itself.

If an airline loses or damages it, get a Property Irregularity Report and notify the airline in writing within their time limits; for theft, report to local police within 24 hours and get a written report.

Types of flying

1. Does paragliding cover only apply to tandem flights?

No — both solo and tandem flying are covered. The policy doesn't require you to be qualified, to fly with an instructor, or to fly tandem; as a passenger on a tandem flight you're covered too.

You must follow the safety guidelines for the activity and use the recommended safety equipment. Remember the Pack 4 limits apply either way: Europe only, no Personal accident or Personal liability cover.

2. Are there conditions on my flying — known sites, someone knowing my location, or tracking?

The policy doesn't impose a specific list of flying rules, but it does have conditions you must meet: the activity must be properly supervised, you must wear the correct safety equipment, and there's a general duty to take precautions against injury.

In practice that means flying within the guidelines of the sport — from recognised sites, in suitable conditions, with someone aware of your plans.

3. Am I covered to work as a paragliding instructor or commercial tandem pilot?

No — cover is on a non-professional, leisure basis only. Being paid to fly, instructing commercially, or receiving sponsorship, fees or prize money over £500 puts you outside the cover. Call us on 0800 043 0020 to discuss the right product.

4. Does the policy cover paragliding competitions?

Yes — amateur competitions can be covered, on both Travel Plus and Adventures. What's not covered is competing professionally: paid or sponsored flying, or fees/prize money over £500. If you're entering a competition, call 0800 043 0020. Get a Quote

5. Is speed flying / speed riding covered under paragliding?

No — speed flying and speed riding (paragliding with skis) aren't on any of the policy's activity lists, and you're not covered for any activity that isn't on your chosen list.

The same applies to paramotoring/powered paragliding and hang gliding — none of these are listed, so none are covered.

Buying the policy

1. Can I get a quote for paragliding?

Yes — get a quote online and select Activity Pack 4, or call us on 0800 043 0020. Paragliding carries an extra premium because it sits in the highest activity pack; price is also affected by your age, trip length and destination area. Get a Quote

2. I can't see paragliding on the quote form — is 'parapenting' the same thing?

Yes — the policy wording lists the activity as "parapenting/paraponting/paragliding", so if the online quote shows activity pack 4, that's the right option for paragliding. If you can't find it at all, Email us or call us on 0800 043 0020 and we'll set the quote up for you.

3. Can we be both be in on one policy if only one of us is paragliding?

You can, although it wouldn't be cost-effective, as you would be paying the paragliding premium for all travellers.

It would be more economical to buy a paragliding policy for the paraglider - Get a Quote

And a separate policy for those not taking part in the paragliding - Get a Quote

4. Does the annual multi-trip policy include paragliding?

Yes — Activity Pack 4 can be added to an annual multi-trip policy as well as single trip cover.

On annual cover each trip can last up to 33 days (extendable to 45 or 60 days for an extra premium), and there's no cap on how many days of that you spend paragliding.

Single trip policies cover trips up to 115 days.

5. What's the age limit for paragliding cover?

The policy is available to people aged 75 or under (you must also be a UK resident and registered with a GP). There's no separate age limit for paragliding itself, and no altitude restriction on the activity. - Get a Quote
