Travelling with Essential Tremor

Essential tremor does not stop people travelling. Nothing to monitor, no attacks to manage, no destinations off limits - which is why it sits on our accepted list with no screening attached.

A few practical things are worth knowing:

Expect to Be Shakier for a Day

Tiredness, caffeine and a rushed morning all amplify tremor, and a travel day brings all three. It settles once you have slept - so book a gentle first day.

A Few Things That Make Life Easier When Travelling with Essential Tremor

  • Check in online so there is nothing to sign at a desk.
  • Fill in landing and customs forms at home rather than in a queue.
  • Contactless payment saves counting unfamiliar coins.
  • Airport assistance is free - book it 48 hours ahead if you would rather not do security under time pressure.

Medication:

  • Hand luggage, original packaging, copy of your prescription. Usual times across time zones.
  • Propranolol and heat can leave you light-headed - keep hydrated.
  • Alcohol is not a treatment. It steadies tremor briefly, then rebounds worse.

Activities

Tremor affects fine movements and settles during large ones, so what suits you may surprise you:

Sailing - ropes and tiller are broad, braced movements. No trouble.

Scuba diving - fine underwater. Mention your medication to the dive operator, as beta blockers affect heart rate.

Fishing - casting is easy, tying flies is the fiddly bit. Pre-tied rigs sort it.

Cycling - gripping the bars actually dampens hand tremor.

Swimming - among the least affected of all.

Add activities at the quote stage so they appear on your validation certificate - see the full Sports and Activities list.

Essential Tremor Is Not Parkinson’s

The two get confused. Essential tremor shows when you use your hands; Parkinson’s when they are resting - and essential tremor is 8 to 10 times more common. It is not an early sign of Parkinson’s. For cover purposes: Parkinson’s is not on our accepted list, so if that is your diagnosis, call 0800 043 0020, and we will sort your policy out.
