Primary or Secondary Raynaud’s?

Most people have the primary form, which occurs on its own - that is what our accepted list means by Raynaud’s disease.

If yours is secondary to another condition such as scleroderma, lupus, vasculitis or rheumatoid arthritis, that condition needs declaring too, so please call us instead of buying online.

Ski Trips and Cold Weather Holidays

A ski holiday is the hardest test your Raynaud’s will face - hours of cold, wind chill on the chairlifts, and hands wrapped round metal poles. Doable with the right kit, but worth planning.

Mittens beat gloves - fingers keep each other warm. Add silk or thermal liners underneath.

Warm up before you go out, not after - an attack is far harder to reverse once you are out in the cold.

Check your boots are not too tight - anything restricting circulation makes toes worse.

Take breaks indoors - ten minutes and a warm drink is not wasted time.

On cover: skiing, snowboarding and similar activities are not included as standard - you will need Winter Sports cover added to your policy before you travel.

Hot Destinations: Mind the Air Conditioning

Sudden temperature changes trigger attacks as much as cold itself - walking out of 30 degree heat into a fiercely air-conditioned lobby, restaurant or coach is a classic one.

Keep a light layer in your day bag, even when it feels absurd.

Ask for a table away from the air-conditioning unit.

Hold cold drinks with a napkin rather than bare hands, and go easy on the ice.

Pools can be surprisingly cold - test first, and warm up properly afterwards.

Cabins run cool on long flights - socks, a layer, and something for your hands.

What to Pack

Thin liner gloves - silk or thermal. Useful in air conditioning as well as snow.

Disposable air-activated hand and toe warmers - the single-use kind can go in hand luggage or the hold.

Rechargeable hand warmers must travel in the cabin - lithium batteries are treated like power banks and banned from checked baggage. Keep them with you, switched off.

Your medication - enough for the trip, in original packaging. Nifedipine can cause flushing and light-headedness, which heat adds to.

Layers rather than one thick coat - easier to adjust between temperatures.

If an Attack Starts While You Are Away

Most attacks settle within twenty minutes once you warm up. Get somewhere warmer, put your hands under your arms or in warm - not hot - water, and gently wiggle your fingers and toes.

A word of caution: numb fingers cannot judge temperature, so avoid very hot water, radiators and hairdryers - it is easy to scald yourself without feeling it.
