How it Works & What to Expect
-
Briefing: Your adventure starts with a short briefing from your instructor, covering what to expect during takeoff and the flight.
-
Equipment: Reputable operators provide all necessary equipment, including helmets and harnesses. You'll be securely strapped in with your instructor.
-
Takeoff: Unlike skydiving, there's no jumping. You'll typically launch from a gentle slope. With a few brisk steps (5-15 meters, depending on wind and terrain), the paraglider will lift you off the ground. This transition is seamless and natural.
-
The Flight: Once airborne, you'll be amazed by the peacefulness and stunning views. Your instructor will navigate, allowing you to relax and enjoy the ride. Flights can range from 10-20 minutes for a "discovery" flight, or longer (30-50 minutes or even hours) for soaring or thermal flights, depending on conditions and location. You can often talk to your pilot during the flight, who might point out landmarks.
-
Landing: As you near the ground, your instructor will guide the landing. You'll need to lift your legs and may need to take a few steps upon touchdown. It's generally a smooth process.
Safety: Tandem paragliding with a professional pilot is considered very safe.
Who can Go?
Pretty much everyone! There are generally no special requirements for passengers, and it's inclusive for individuals of various ages and health conditions. Some operators have age limits (e.g., 12-65 years) and weight limits (e.g., 40-125kg, or 7-19 stone). If you have reduced mobility or a physical disability, it's worth contacting the operator directly as some can accommodate this.
What to Wear
Experienced Pilots: Certified pilots undergo extensive training in meteorology, aerodynamics, and emergency procedures. They regularly monitor weather conditions and will cancel flights if conditions are unfavourable.
-
High-Quality Equipment: Modern equipment is designed with multiple safety features and undergoes regular maintenance checks. Pilots also carry reserve parachutes.
-
Low Risk: Statistically, the likelihood of injury in tandem paragliding is extremely low, comparable to hiking or running, and significantly safer than driving. The main risks are minor injuries like ankle strains during takeoff or landing if you don't follow instructions (e.g., stopping running too early).
Cost: Prices for a single tandem flight in the UK generally range from around £160 to £290 or more, depending on the location and flight duration. Some operators offer discounts for multiple people or gift vouchers.
Tips for your Flight
-
Layers: It can get colder at higher altitudes, so wear layers you can easily put on or take off.
-
Long Pants and Long Sleeves: To protect your skin from the sun and wind.
-
Sturdy, Closed-Toe Shoes: Crucial for takeoff and landing. Avoid sandals or flip-flops.
-
Sunglasses: To protect your eyes from the sun and wind.
-
Avoid: Loose or baggy clothes that could get caught in equipment.
-
Choose a reputable and certified operator: Look for good reviews, strong safety records, and experienced, licensed pilots.
-
Call the day before: Paragliding is highly weather-dependent. Always confirm with your pilot the evening before your scheduled flight.
-
Listen to your pilot: This is crucial for your safety and enjoyment, especially during takeoff and landing.
-
Relax and enjoy: The sensation of flying is often described as peaceful and serene, with no "stomach drop" feeling like a rollercoaster.
-
Bring friends/family: They can take pictures and share in your adventure.
-
Make it a day out: Consider combining your flight with a walk or a nice meal nearby to reflect on the experience.
