Travelling with sinusitis can be a real pain, both literally and figuratively. The changes in cabin pressure during take-off and landing can worsen congestion and pain, making your journey uncomfortable and unpleasant.

Before You Travel

  • You must take medical advice before flying, especially if you have a severe infection or underlying health conditions. Your doctor can advise you on the risks and benefits of flying and recommend medications or other measures to manage your symptoms.
  • If you do decide to fly, pack decongestants, pain delivers, and saline nasal spray. Nasal decongestants can help open up your sinuses, while saline spray can help moisten irradiated nasal passages.

During your flight

  • Drink plenty of fluids to help thin mucus and keep your nasal passages moist. Avoid dehydration drinks like alcohol and caffeine.
  • Chew gum or suck on hard candy. This can help equalize pressure in your ears during take-off and landing.
  • Perform the Valsalva maneuver. This involves gently pinching your nose closed and blowing out of your mouth while trying to keep your ears closed. Do this slowly and avoid forceful blowing.
  • Choose a window seat. The increased humidity near the window can help prevent your sinuses from drying out.

It is important to listen to your body and be aware of your symptoms. If your pain worsens or you experience any new or concerning symptoms, seek medical attention immediately.
