Jailbreak Travel Insurance

Jailbreaks are popular with universities and are a great way to raise money for charity. The challenge is to get as far away from the University as possible in a limited time frame with no money.

We will require a start date and end date for the event. This Policy allows us to extend the return date as long as we have 24 hours notice.

Hitchhiking / Jailbreak is automatically covered under ACTIVITY PACK 1 - so there is no need to add any Cover Option to the quote.

Who do We Provide Cover for?

JS Travel Insurance has been working with several Universities over the last few years, providing them with a policy that covers the Jailbreak event each year. Oxford, Cambridge and Southampton Universities have used us for this event over the last five years.

We have covered the participants who have travelled to Europe and beyond. Some students have reached as far as Singapore, Australia and the USA.

How It Works

Our experience with this event means that arranging travel insurance is simple.

Once you've finalised your Participant List, you will need the following information:

  • Dates of the Jailbreak Event.
  • Names of Participants.
  • Dates of Birth of each Participant.

We can issue a Policy up to 24 hours before the Jailbreak starts. Last-minute changes are also possible (participant information) if the event has not started.

All policies will begin with cover for the European Geographical Region. For those Participants who travel further than Europe, you will need to inform us to validate their travel Insurance; an additional premium will be charged for these individuals.

The Event Organiser will be assigned a Personal Account Manager at JS Travel Insurance who will be available on call 24 hours a day so that you can inform us of any changes required during the event.

The final premium is calculated and invoiced at the end of the Jailbreak Event. If you prefer, payment can be made by BACs Transfer, Cheque or Credit / Debit Card.

Extension of Cover

The Policy will be scheduled to cover the Jailbreak Event only, usually up to 3 days of cover.

If participants decide to extend their travel beyond the event, they will need additional Travel Insurance to cover any unforeseen circumstances. We can provide this cover - please call us for a quote. The body can be arranged before or after they leave the UK - we will select an appropriate policy to suit your needs.

We can also add sports and activities to the new Policy, such as winter sports, cycling, or quad biking.

Gadget Cover

JS Travel Insurance provides Gadget Cover (including mobile phones and tablets). We will pay up to £1,000 for the intrinsic value or cost of repair of your Gadgets which are lost or stolen.

Jailbreak FAQs

What is Jailbreak?

This is a sponsored hitchhiking event. The participants must get as far as possible from their home country in a limited period and without money.

How does this event raise money for Charity?

The participants must pay a small fee to register to cover administration costs. The participants are then given a minimum target amount to raise before the event begins. Additional fundraising events may occur on campus to raise money, too. There are usually workshops and social gatherings so everyone can meet and discuss the possibility.

Participants are encouraged to carry collection buckets en route to gather donations as they travel. Donations will be put into the final fundraising pot when they return home (minus any agreed out-of-pocket payments for food or accommodation).

How do I travel if I don't have any money?

The Event Organisers will set their own rules or guidelines. You will be allowed to fundraise before and during the event, which, if the rules allow, may be spent on food, drink or accommodation. However, this money should not be spent on transportation.

Therefore, you'll need your charm and persuasion to get free transport: cars, buses, trains, boats and planes. Flight companies are usually willing to give up last-minute unused seats in the name of charity.

How do I get back home?

For your return journey home, the Event Organisers usually allow you to spend your money on a ticket, or you could try hitchhiking for free.

Do I have to return home straight away?

No. You can choose to extend your stay at your destination or continue travelling.

However, after the Jailbreak Policy ends, you must ensure you get a new Policy in place to cover the second part of your trip. You can arrange this new Policy before or after you leave the United Kingdom - please call us for a quote.

Can I spend some of the donations?

The Event Organisers will set the rules on what you can and cannot spend donated money on. Generally speaking, donations can be spent on food, drink and accommodation, but not on transport.

Is Jailbreak a safe event?

Jailbreak is typically a Team Event. This means participants travel in small groups (usually two to three in a group), which increases safety. However, you'll still need to remain aware of potential dangers, road safety, and climate conditions to ensure you have the best experience possible.

If you have any accidents, illnesses or injuries, our Policy will provide 24-hour Medical Emergency Assistance to help you get appropriate medical care as soon as possible. Please ask the Event Organiser for a copy of the Travel Insurance Certificate and relevant contact numbers to carry with you.
