Key Considerations

Sensory Sensitivities:

  • Airports, train stations, and other travel hubs can be overwhelming due to noise, crowds, and bright lights.
  • Changes in routine and unfamiliar environments can also trigger sensory overload.

Communication:

  • Communication difficulties can make it challenging to ask for help or express needs.

Routine and Predictability:

  • Autistic individuals often thrive on routine, and travel can disrupt this.
  • Unpredictable situations, such as flight delays or changes in plans, can cause anxiety.

Tips for Successful Travel

Planning and Preparation:

  • Advance Planning: Research your destination and transportation options thoroughly.
  • Create a Detailed Itinerary: A visual schedule or social story can help provide a sense of predictability.
  • Practice Runs: If possible, do a practice run of parts of your journey, such as visiting the airport or train station beforehand.
  • Communicate with Travel Partners: Inform airlines, hotels, and other service providers about your needs in advance.

Sensory Management:

  • Bring Sensory Tools: Pack noise-cancelling headphones, sunglasses, fidget toys, and other comfort items.
  • Choose Accommodation Carefully: Look for quiet rooms or accommodations with sensory-friendly features.
  • Pack Familiar Items: Bring comfort items from home, such as a favourite blanket or toy.

Communication and Support:

  • Carry Identification: Ensure the individual carries identification with contact information and any relevant medical information.
  • Use Communication Aids: Consider using communication cards or apps to help express needs.
  • Travel with a Support Person: If possible, travel with a trusted friend or family member who can provide support.

During Travel:

  • Allow Extra Time: Build in extra time for travel to avoid rushing.
  • Take Breaks: Schedule regular breaks to rest and recharge.
  • Pack Snacks and Drinks: Bring familiar snacks and drinks to avoid relying on unfamiliar food options.
  • Utilise Available Resources: Take advantage of any special assistance programs offered by airlines or other travel providers.
