Popular Areas for American Football
American Football is rapidly gaining popularity outside of the USA and Canada and is being played across Europe and the rest of the world. While obviously America and Canada remain the home of the sport, American Football Association in Japan was established in the 1930's and there is a European League featuring teams from Scotland, England, Spain, The Netherlands and Germany.
Common Injuries whilst playing American Football
American Football is a tough contact sport and it is easy to be seriously hurt whilst playing. Players have often needed major surgery to repair otherwise career ending injuries. Concussions are also a common problem for many players and, while the theory that they are related to permanent brain injury has been denied by The Concussions Committee of the National Football League, some statistics show that retired professional Football Players suffer more commonly from Dementia. This is something that could potentially affect High School and College level players also.
The most common cause of injury among players is from tackling, and the injuries sustained can affect the players for the rest of their lives. The areas that most often sustain injury are the knee, ankle, shoulder, head and leg. Sprains, torn ligaments, contusions, dislocated joints, suppressed nerves and concussions are all common problems for players of the sport.
American Football Equipment
In order to minimise the risk of causing permanent harm, it is vitally important to wear the correct protective gear when participating in the sport. This includes a helmet, gloves, jock strap, hip, tail, thigh, shoulder and knee pads, mouth guard, and spiked shoes or cleats.
When travelling with American Football equipment, check with the Airline you are travelling with for their policies on over sized, excess and over weight baggage.
To ensure your Travel Insurance remains valid, you must ensure that you are adequately supervised, that appropriate safety equipment (such as protective headwear etc.) are worn at all times and you do not participate in American Football for more than 90 days in any one Period of Insurance.
