Common Injuries:

There are a number of injuries that can occur as a result of horse riding; there is in fact more risk of serious injury as a result of riding a horse than there is from riding a motorcycle.

Horses can be unpredictable and if spooked can throw their rider.

They may also come to a sudden stop, for example before a jump, leaving the rider to go over their head. Some people have fallen from a horse and, with their foot caught in the stirrups, been dragged along behind it.

Broken bones, spinal injuries, brain damage and even fatalities are not uncommon accidents to occur in horse riding.

It is equally possible to have a horse kick you if you spook it when not riding.

In order to protect yourself when riding, make sure you always wear the correct protective gear and always wear a riding helmet.

For this reason, it is vitally important to ensure you are covered with travel insurance before you go on a horse riding holiday.

Equipment:

The correct gear is a necessity when going horse riding; the most important item of which being the riding helmet. Wearing a helmet can prevent you from serous injury or death if you should fall from your horse.

Proper riding boots, with a small heel, can also help when riding to keep the foot from sliding out of the stirrup.

Jodhpurs are good to wear when riding as they are made of a stretchy material that will allow you to move more freely with your horse.

Wearing a protective jacket on top can also help should you fall from the horse, to protect you from unnecessary cuts and abrasions.

There are back supports available to use when riding to provide further support during riding that you may wish to consider using.
