JS Insurance provides Single Trip, Annual Multi Trip and Long Stay Travel Insurance to those who have Eczema.

Eczema is a common skin condition which is a form of dermatitis. It is an itchy inflammation of the skin.

The symptoms of Eczema are itchiness, which is the main symptom, as well as redness, blisters and cracked skin.

During a flare-up, your skin may be extremely itchy, red, hot, dry, scaly, wet, weeping and swollen. There are many different types of eczema from mild to severe, atopic, contact and varicose.

Atopic Eczema is the most common form which is found to run in families.

Some of the most common types are:

  • Atopic- often found in people who have allergies like hay fever and asthma.
  • Due to skin contact to a substance that someone is allergic to.
  • Irritant contact-due to skin contact with irritating chemicals, powders and cleaning agents etc.
  • Seborrhoeic- common in infants in the nappy area and scalp. Also can be found on adults in the skin creases between the nose and sides of the month and scalp.
  • Varicose veins and pompholyx-an intensely itchy form located on the hands and composed of small or large blisters.

Some of the lesser well known types of Eczema are:

  • Dyshidrosis - usually occurs on the soles of the feet and palms of the hands. Is often worse in warm weather.
  • Venous eczema - common in people with impaired circulation so normally only appears in people aged over 50
  • Neurodermatitis - a thickened, localisedarea of hardened skin caused by prolonged scratching and rubbing.

There is not a cure for Atopic Eczema. Although there are various treatments available from you GP or pharmacies which help ease the condition.

Avoid trigger factors if you know them. For instance, if you know your eczema flares up in hot weather then it may be wise not to travel to very warm destinations during the summer months.

Keep the skin hydrated by regularly using moisturiser and moisturizing soaps. These help to maintain the barrier function of the skin and reduce itching, scratching and the penetration of irritants, allergens and micro-organisms.

They have been shown to reduce the number of flare-ups of eczema which are experienced, and therefore reduce the need for topical corticosteroids.

If you are travelling with others, we can include them on the policy, even if they do not have any pre existing medical conditions.
