Excluding Medical Conditions
We can provide cover that excludes all of your diagnosed medical conditions on a Single Trip or Annual Multi-Trip Policy. This does depend on the medical conditions that you have. If you are unsure please feel free to contact us and we can let you know if we can exclude the medical conditions or not.
You will not be covered for any claim arising directly or indirectly from any medical conditions you have or have had for which you are taking or have taken prescribed medication or for which you are waiting to receive or have received diagnosis or treatment (including surgery, test or investigations), at any time before purchasing this policy.
For your information, examples of conditions that can be indirectly linked to pre-existing medical conditions you have or have had include:
- Someone with high blood pressure or diabetes has a heart attack, stroke or mini-stroke.
- Someone who has or has had cancer who suffers from secondary cancer.
- Someone with osteoporosis who then suffered from a broken or fractured bone.
Please get in touch with us so that we can provide this cover. 0800 043 0020 / 01273 092 757
Awaiting Medical Treatment or Investigation
If you are awaiting medical treatment or investigation, our policy will NOT provide cover for cancellation and curtailment under the following circumstances unless you purchase our additional option for Waiting List Cover (which can be added to our Gold and Platinum Single Trip policies only):
- You receive an appointment for treatment or investigation which conflicts with your planned trip
- As a result of the awaited treatment or research, you become unable to travel on your planned journey.
Awaiting treatment or investigation does not affect cover whilst you are away for medical conditions you have declared to us.
Please notify us immediately if you become aware of a change in your medical history before you travel.
If you are awaiting an initial diagnosis for symptoms you are experiencing, you will not be covered until you have a confirmed diagnosis.
Why Premiums May Increase
The most common and usually expensive cost to travel insurance providers relates to Emergency Medical Expenses and Repatriation to the insured person's home country following injury or illness.
Some travel insurance with pre-existing conditions carries a low risk of a claim being made; therefore, the associated premium is relatively low.
On the other hand, the premium will be relatively higher for medical conditions where research shows that there is a high chance the customer will have to claim and that there would be high medical expenses in the event of a claim.
Premiums will also vary depending on the Geographical Region, cover length and the customer's age.
This gives our customers the peace of mind that we will cover the costs of Emergency Medical Treatment so they don't have to.
Medical Screening FAQs
Why is medical screening important?
This is important so we can decide if we can provide cover. It does not take very long but can involve some personal questions.
Suppose you do not tell us about your Medical Condition(s) which you've had within the period specified within the quote. In that case, you might find that a claim will be refused, as we were not given the complete picture, and therefore, the premium would have been incorrect.
Do I need to declare minor medical conditions and treatment?
All medical conditions for which you have received investigations, medical treatment, prescription medication, visits to a hospital or clinic, or any other medical practitioner must be declared. Usually, this relates to any medical treatment in the last two years. This includes mild asthma, chest infections and a sprain, for example.
What will the outcome be of the medical screening process?
When you have answered the medical questions, you will be presented with two options.
- A standard travel insurance policy that covers the Medical Condition(s)
- Refuse to insure you
You might want to consider a Single Trip policy if we cannot cover your pre-existing medical conditions on an Annual Multi-Trip policy.
Medical Conditions That Need to be Declared
Here are a few examples of medical conditions that will need to be on your travel insurance policy:
- Diabetes: Let us know if you have Type 1 or Type 2 or any other form of Diabetes
- Heart Conditions: Provide details of any heart condition you have or have had
- Circulatory Conditions: Such as high blood pressure or high cholesterol
- Physiological Conditions: Such as anxiety or depression
- Cancer: Even if you are in remission, we will need to know the type of cancer and at what stage you are with the treatment
- Terminal Conditions: We will need to know if you have a terminal illness such as Parkinson's Disease
Please remember that all pre-existing medical conditions must be declared to provide you with a valid quote and policy.
