History of Gliding

Gliding is the oldest form of Aviation; The Wright Brothers tried out different types of Gliders before completing their first flight (with a Glider).

Gliding is related to other air sports, such as hang gliding and paragliding because they all use gliders. This aircraft does not use an engine but depends on rising air currents and its superb aerodynamics.

Although Gliding is a non-motorised sport, flights can last several hours and cover hundreds of miles.

Skilled Pilots can use airlifts to gain altitude and, by doing so, prolong their flights.

Some pilots may climb to 3,000 metres or more altitudes using thermal lifts. Three air currents can be used to glide: Ridge Lifts, Thermal Lifts and Lee Waves.

While experienced Pilots can use one or a combination of those three air currents to stay in the air for many hours, the average gliding flight, especially on holidays, is much shorter than that.

Generally speaking, the sport's safety is directly influenced by the skill and sense of the Pilot.

A safe Pilot will not fly at sites that are too challenging for their skills and will not pass on days when the weather is turbulent.
