Cycle Race Safety Tips

Wear a Good Helmet: For maximum safety, wear a good and well-fitted cycle helmet to protect yourself from a fatal injury and ensure your travel insurance policy is valid.

Know your strengths and weaknesses: When cycling racing, focus on what you are good at and reduce what you are not good at. Knowing your strengths and weaknesses will help you race more effectively.

Train specifically for the race: Train for the race or sportive you are planning on entering or have entered. If the race is hilly, do a lot of hill training. If it's a time trial race, focus on timing yourself while training. For travel insurance for Cycle Training Camps, Click Here.

Practice riding in a group: Most cycle races are in big groups, so if you are a beginner, you should practice riding with other cyclists and get used to it; this will help you learn to stay safe and race efficiently.

Learn how to draft: Drafting is a great way to save energy in a race. When you draw behind another cyclist, you can slipstream behind them, reducing the wind resistance you must overcome.

Position yourself wisely: If you are not a strong rider, don't spend all your time at the front of the pack. You will waste your energy. Find your spot within the group and focus on drafting other riders until it's time to improve your cycling ability.

Pace yourself: Cycle races are exciting, and it's easy to overexert yourself at the start of a race; by not pacing yourself, you will fade in the later stages of a race, which could make you drop positions or not hit the time you are capable of, pace yourself and finish strong!

Eat and drink regularly: Staying hydrated and fueled with energy during a race can keep you strong and alert; you should eat and drink little and often throughout the race to avoid getting tired or too full.

Common Cycle Racing Injuries

Cycling injuries are overuse injuries that develop over time due to repeated movement patterns or traumatic injuries sustained after falling from your bike at high speed or colliding.

Knee Pain

This is the most common area of complaint for Cyclists due to overuse, poor technique or position. Anterior knee pain and patellofemoral pain syndrome are Cyclists' most common leg overuse injuries.

Patellofemoral Pain Syndrome is pain under or around the kneecap. Patellofemoral pain may happen due to frequent contact and rubbing of the kneecap on the thigh bone or when the kneecap is misaligned due to the repetitive pedalling motion.

Osteoarthritis

Osteoarthritis is a degenerative disease that results in gradual wear and tear of the joint cartilage; symptoms of Osteoarthritis include:

Swelling, pain and a decrease in the range of motion.

To avoid knee injuries, it is essential to have a proper racing saddle (which is narrow and somewhat hard) that is set up at the correct height.

Neck and Back pain

This is usually caused by staying in one riding position for too long and factors such as poor posture and incorrect body positioning.

If the bike frame is too long or your handlebars are too low, the rider tends to hunch over, which causes increased strain on the neck and back.

Saddle Sores

These are unavoidable nuisances while training for races and participating in races.

They are caused by repeatedly rubbing off the skin against the saddle, which causes abrasions and cuts. This is generally treated with ointments and pastes.

Cycle Racing Annual Multi-Trip Benefits

An Annual multi-trip policy may be a good idea if you travel multiple times yearly for Cycle Racing / Sportive events or standard travel.

31-Day Maximum Trip Length Days: Our policies include a 31-day maximum trip length with unlimited Cycle Racing Days.

Peace of Mind: Having an Annual policy can give you peace of mind that you are covered for 12 months for travel and Cycle Racing and have your travel insurance benefits covered, such as Medical, Cancellation, Baggage, and more.

Cost Effective: An Annual policy can save you money if you travel multiple times a year; buying a single-trip policy for every trip can add an extra cost.

Convenience: Not only can it save you money, but it can also save you time by having one policy for the year and not having to search for one every time you travel.

Pre-Existing Medical Conditions

If you have been in Cycle Racing before and may have had an injury or accident whilst taking part in Cycle Racing, you must declare this when purchasing a policy.

Our provider (Adventures) can offer travel insurance, including Cycle Racing if you have a pre-existing medical condition.
