History of Boxing

Boxing is one of the oldest sports in the world. The first recorded image of Boxing dates from the 3rd Millennium BC, shown on a Sumerian Relief.

Boxing with gloves is known to have happened on Minoan Crete between 1,500 and 900 BC. It has been an organised sport since the Ancient Greeks made it an Olympic Games in the 7th Century BC.

Modern-day Boxing originated in Great Britain between the 16th and 18th centuries when prize fights were widespread.

That type of Boxing evolved into the modern variant of gloved Boxing in the mid-19th Century; the places where modern Boxing came into existence were, again, Great Britain and the United States.

Popular Destinations for Boxing

Boxing is a popular sport worldwide, with wide local varieties; examples are Thai and Kick Boxing.

There are many different governing and sanctioning bodies. The British Boxing Board of Control and the European Boxing Union are major governing bodies.

The major sanctioning bodies are the World Boxing Organization, the World Boxing Council, and the World Boxing Association.

Boxing is still very popular in the United States and Great Britain. Still, it is also a common sport in Europe, Mexico, Thailand, Argentina, Japan, Puerto Rico, the Philippines and Cuba.

Every Governing Body organises its Championships and Competitions. For instance, the World Amateur Boxing Championships occur every other year in a different country.

Boxing Equipment

Boxing is a highly physical sport, and its aggressive nature can cause many injuries. That is why precautions are necessary to protect Boxers' bodies.

Modern Boxing equipment includes gloves, hand and wrist wraps, and mouthpieces.

The gloves have two purposes: lessening the force of the blows on the opponent's Body and protecting the Boxer's hands.

The hand and wrist wraps secure the bones in the Boxer's hands and wrists, while the mouthpiece protects the teeth and tongue and cushions the jaw, lowering the chance of a knockout.

Training equipment is much more extensive and includes punch bags, jump ropes and weight training equipment, such as kettlebells, dumbbells and barbells.
