Beach Rugby. Did You Know?

Playing or Training on sand gives you less strain on your joints and softens the effects of tackles and collisions compared to traditional Field Rugby. Find out more information about the Majorca Rugby Festival.

Common Beach Rugby Injuries

While beach Rugby tends to have a lower injury rate than traditional Field Rugby due to the softer surface, injuries still occur.

Lower Limb

  • Ankle Sprains: Uneven footing in the sand can lead to rolled ankles, especially during quick changes of direction or tackles.
  • Knee Strains: The constant strain of running and jumping in the sand can stress your knees, increasing the risk of injury.
  • Achilles Tendonitis: Overuse and repetitive stress can irritate the Achilles tendon, leading to pain and inflammation.

Upper Body

  • Shoulder Strains: Tackling and trucking in beach rugby can strain the shoulders, particularly the rotator cuff muscles.
  • Wrist Sprains: Broken falls or reaching for tackles on the sand can cause minor wrist sprains.

General

  • Cuts and Scrapes: Diving for the ball or sliding in the sand can cause minor cuts and scrapes.
  • Sunburn and Dehydration: If not correctly addressed, spending extended time under the sun can lead to sunburn and dehydration.

General Breach Rugby Rules

The Field

  • Think smaller. A typical beach rugby pitch is 30-35 metres long and 20-25 metres wide.
  • No lines or goalposts. The pitch is marked by cones or flags in the sand.
  • Scoring zones. Each end has an in-goal area (usually 2-3 metres deep) where you score by grounding the ball.

The Players

  • Less is more. Teams typically have five players on the field at any one time, with substitutes allowed during stoppages in play.
  • Barfoot: There is no need to worry about putting on your studs. It is common that all beach rugby tournaments are barefoot only. Please check with the tournament provider.

The Game

  • Fast and Furious. Games are shorter than traditional Rugby, with halves usually lasting 4 to 6 minutes.
  • Keep it moving. The two-second rule is critical. When tackled, a player must pass or release the ball within two seconds to keep the game flowing.
  • No scrums or lineouts. These technicalities are ditched in favour of a more straightforward, fast-paced game.
  • Have you kicked it? Not really. Kicking is generally not allowed except for the initial tap kick to start the game or a restart after a score.

Basic Scoring

  • Try Time! Grounding the ball in the opponent's in-goal area is the only way to score. And it is worth one point.
  • There are no conversions or penalties. Scoring is simple and focuses on getting the ball down at the beach end zone.

General Principles

  • Offside? That is no problem. There are no complex offside rules like in traditional rugby.
  • Touchdowns? Not here. The ball going out of bounds results in a restart with a tap kick.
  • Fouls and Free Plays. Referees will penalise dangerous play, with fewer kicks awarded to the opposing team.
