Medical Questions

When obtaining a quote to cover someone with Alzheimer's, you will be asked several questions:

  • Do they need assistance with dressing, eating or washing?
  • Do they require more assistance or supervision than you did six months ago?
  • When they travel, will they always be accompanied?

Travel Advice

Some considerations should be considered when travelling with someone with Alzheimer's.

If they require any medication, ensure they or you carry it and do not leave it in the hold luggage, which they or you may get separated from.

Most Airlines say that if someone has a stable or permanent medical condition, they do not require medical clearance; however, check with the airline before you travel. Some require that people who have Alzheimer's do not travel alone if there is a possibility they may become stressed whilst in the air.

Flight staff also do not offer assistance with eating, medical needs or going to the toilet, so they will not let them travel alone if they require this service.

If they are travelling with a Carer and wish to visit friends or relatives, it may be worth planning with the people they are staying with to see if anyone can spend regular time with them or help at specific times to give them and their Carer a break.

Suppose there is a Carer travelling with a person who has Alzheimer's. In that case, they can be added to the same policy even if they do not have Alzheimer's or other pre-existing medical conditions.

If they are planning independent travel, you may wish to book outside of the season as the staff should be less busy and have more time to help accommodate their needs.

You should inform the hotel where you are staying of their health requirements and check if it is the right place for them.

Alternatively, you could book a package holiday where everything is arranged for you. Should you choose to do this, again, check with the Travel Agent and hotel to ensure that it is the proper holiday for them and that the hotel staff will be able to accommodate their needs and provide the help required.

Holiday and Travel Services are specifically designed for people who need exceptional support, such as Alzheimer's.
