When an active volcano erupts, huge clouds of rock particles and dust are thrown into the air as a result of the huge forces involved in the blast.
Volcanic ash in the atmosphere can give a yellowy brown tinge to sunlight or in severe instances can block out sunlight altogether, causing darkness in the middle of the day.
Storm like conditions can ensue, and this can lead to power cuts and communication breakdowns.
Volcanic ash can also have a debilitating effect on air travel.
Ash clouds have very limited visibility and can coat a plane windscreen to the extent that a pilot effectively has to fly blind.
Ash can also interfere with radio communication and in flight instruments.
The most serious threat however is the threat of engine failure. As such vast quantities of air are sucked into the engines during flight, a high amount of dust and ash particles can erode or completely destroy parts of the engine.
Ash can also stick to parts of the engine and cause heat sensors to believe that they are overheating. This will lead to an automatic shutdown of the engines.
British Airways flight 9 in 1982, and KLM flight 867 in 1989 both flew into ash clouds where all four engines failed in mid air.
Luckily in both situations the engines eventually restarted after the aircraft was able to be successfully manoeuvred out of the ash cloud.
Incidents such as these demonstrate why airlines are reluctant to continue operating flights after volcanic eruptions.
