Tracheostomy:

A tracheostomy is a surgical procedure for which an incision is made into the trachea, into which a tube is inserted. This can be done to either help the person breathe freely or remove excess fluids. Tracheostomies are usually temporary although they can be permanent in some cases.

Travel Advice:

While there is no reason why someone with a tracheostomy can not travel, certain considerations need to be implemented prior to travel.

• It is important that you purchase travel insurance before leaving the country
• Contact your physician to ensure that it is safe for you to travel
• Carry enough equipment with you for the duration of your journey, plus extras in case of emergency or unforeseen delay
• If travelling by air, some airlines do not allow equipment such as suction machines on board the plane, so check with the airline regarding their policies prior to travel
• Request that oxygen is available on board the airplane
• You may request that you use the oxygen already available on board the airplane
• If you are travelling by car, it may be wise to purchase another interior mirror with which you can keep an eye on the tracheostomy patient
• Make sure you carry with you a list of emergency contact numbers
• Carry a short letter detailing the nature of the medical condition
