Thromboangiitis is a disease that affects the blood vessels. It can lead to the swelling and clotting of arteries and even to gangrene. It is a condition that is associated with smoking.

While Thromboangiitis is not immediately life threatening, it does serve to directly shorten one's life.

If the person who suffers from the disease does not immediately stop smoking, it can lead to the necessary amputation of limbs, toes or fingers.

The condition is not usually treated with medication, although anti-inflammatory drugs can help reduce the pain suffered.

The complete cessation of smoking is the most obvious and immediate treatment for this condition.

Sometimes heart surgery can prove helpful.

If you suffer from this condition and want to go on holiday make sure that:

• You purchase travel insurance before leaving the country
• Are in a stable condition and safe to travel
• Wear DVT socks or compression stockings when travelling by air
• Move your feet and legs around whilst flying, to help the blood flow and prevent the blood from clotting
• If you are on any medication, take enough with you to last for the entire trip, plus extra in case of emergency/delay
• Carry a recent prescription from your doctor on you
• If you have had heart surgery, do not travel to areas that have a high altitude, as this can put excess pressure on your heart
• Plan a relaxing holiday that will not involve any strenuous activity that you are not used to doing on a regular basis
