Spina bifida is a congenital disorder in which the spine does not close while a foetus is being formed in the womb.

There are four types of spina bifida:

• Occulta
• Cystica
• Meningocele
• Myelomeningocele

There is a variety of genetic and environmental factors that are thought to be a cause of spina bifida, such as some medications and medical conditions such as diabetes and obesity.

However, there is still no known conclusive cause for the condition.

If you are planning a pregnancy then taking folic acid supplements in the months leading up to planned conception will decrease the risk of a child being born with birth defects.

After birth, surgery can be performed on a child after one to two days to correct the spinal defect. This can have varying degrees of success depending on the severity of the original deformity.

Each case of spina bifida is different, so the severities of possible complications arising from the condition vary. They include:

• Poor bowel control
• Poor bladder control
• Paralysis
• Fluid in the brain
• Meningitis
• Skin problems
• Latex allergies
• Urinary tract infections
• Language and reading comprehension

If you use a crutch or cane then most airlines will let you take this on board the flight. If you are a wheelchair user then it is best to inform the airline in advance of your needs and they will seat you accordingly.

Most airports also have special vehicles to help escort you between terminals with ease.

Any medication that you are taking should be carried in hand luggage in case of delays or loss of luggage.
