Spearfishing is the practice of catching fish with sharpened sticks, spear guns or slings.

Spearfishing is one of the oldest forms of fishing there is, dating back tens of thousands of years. Fish used to be caught using a sharpened piece of wood to strike and kill the fish.

In modern times, spearfishing has been largely recreational since the early 20th century and generally uses pneumatic spear guns to catch fish.

Necessary equipment for spearfishing includes:

• Mask
• Snorkel
• Wetsuit
• 16mm band with a 6.3-6.6mm spear (for fish under 7 kgs (15lbs)
• 20mm band with 7mm spear (all-round use)
• Twin 16mm bands with 7-8mm spear (large fish)

Spearfishing can be quite dangerous due to sea conditions and the hazardous equipment involved. Common injuries include:

• Cuts from spear equipment
• Bruises
• Grazes from coral
• Hypothermia
• Stings

Any open wounds must be disinfected and bandaged immediately to avoid infection. Some basic safety tips when include:

• Dive in a pair or group
• Check local weather before setting out
• Research tides and currents
• Do not point a spear at yourself or anyone else
• Do not fire your spear or gun out of the water
• Make sure you are in good physical fitness to be able to dive
• Watch out for sharp rocks and coral
