Snowshoeing

Snowshoeing is the act of moving across snow with a special type of footwear.

Snowshoes are very wide and flat and are designed to spread the weight of the walker so that they do not sink into the snow.

Historically, snow shoes were used by peoples native to snow covered areas such as inuits. They were used when hunting and trapping.

In modern times snowshoeing is done recreationally by hikers, although snow shoes are still used by people such as forest rangers in order to move around after heavy snowfalls.

Snowshoeing is popular in areas all over the world that have heavy snowfall. These include:

  • Canada
  • USA
  • Sweden
  • Norway
  • Iceland
  • Lapland
  • Greenland
  • Russia

There are three categories of snowshoe:

  • Aerobic/ running
  • Recreational
  • Mountain

Snowshoeing is a relatively low risk activity and have health benefits such as improving cardiovascular performance. However there are some precautions you must take.

Wear many layers to keep warm and avoiding catching hypothermia.

Be careful if you encounter icy surfaces when snowshoeing.

Stick to designated snow trails and do not venture off of paths.
