Snowmobiling is the use of a land vehicle such as a snow mobile or sled to move across ice and snow covered terrain.

They do not require any kind of road surface or even a trail to operate effectively.

Snowmobiles were first used as a utility vehicle but have increasingly become used for recreational purposes. Snowmobiling can be extremely fun but there are dangers. Most accidents are caused by collisions that resulted in falling off of the snowmobile.

As with any vehicle, snowmobiles should not be operated under the influence of drugs or alcohol.

Many snowmobile related fatalities are caused by drowning as people practice on frozen lakes or rivers.

There are some basic ice safety points to remember:

• New ice is stronger than old ice
• Ice does not freeze uniformly, so some areas may be weaker than others
• Ice formed over flowing water is dangerous as the waterfowl and still flowing current can erode the ice very swiftly

Travel in pairs or in a group in case you get lost or in the event of the snowmobile breaking down.

Make sure to wear many layers, hats, gloves and goggles to avoid catching a cold or even hypothermia.
