Overactive Thyroid (Hyperthyroidism):

A medical condition caused by the thyroid gland producing too much of the thyroid hormone.

Travel Advice:

When travelling with Hyperthyroidism, there are some important basics to cover:

• Ensure you pack enough medication to cover you for your entire holiday, plus some extra in case of delays etc.
• If you are travelling with a companion, separate your medication between your sets of luggage in case one of your bags is lost.
• Purchase a comprehensive travel insurance policy.
• If travelling in Europe, make sure you take your European Health Insurance Card.
• Have a recent prescription from your health care provider detailing the medication required for your condition
• Find out if emergency medication can be purchased while on holiday in the area you are travelling to
• Store your medication in the correct conditions, out of direct sunlight, somewhere cool if necessary.

When getting a travel insurance quote for this condition, you will be asked questions relating to your condition:

• Have you had all (or part) of your thyroid gland removed?

Medication:

If you have Hyperthyroidism, you may have been prescribed any of the following medication:

• Beta-blockers
• Radio-iodine
• Thyroid replacement therapy
• Surgery
• Thionamides

Common Causes:

There are a number of different causes for the disease, including:

• Graves disease
• Nodule thyroid disease
• Excessive Iodine supplements in your food
• Taking Amiodarone medication
• Follicular thyroid cancer

Symptoms:

• difficulty sleeping
• hand tremors
• an increase in appetite possibly accompanied by a loss of weight
• palpitations
• sweating
• a dislike of heat
• thirst
• diarrhoea
• a need to pass faeces more often
• breathing difficulties
• tiredness
• muscle weakness
• restlessness
• nervousness and irritability
• light and weak periods

If you are travelling with others, we can include them on the policy even if they do not have any pre existing medical conditions.
