It is increasingly common for people to want to take long holidays in far off exotic places much later in life.

Many people over 90 feel that they may not have seen enough of the world and would like to get some travelling done while they are still in reasonable health.

Also there may be siblings, children or grandchildren that may not have been seen in a very long time that you might want to catch up with.

For this reason many people aged 90+ choose to travel to a wide range of places, including:

  • Australia
  • New Zealand
  • South Africa
  • USA
  • Canada
  • India
  • Thailand
  • Malaysia

However, many older people choose more relaxed holidays in warm conditions, so popular destinations also include:

  • Spain
  • Italy
  • Greece
  • France
  • Morocco
  • Canary Islands

A person over 90 years of age planning on taking a trip should plan carefully and consult and plans with their Doctor and carer.

Mobility issues are one of the biggest problems facing those over the age of 90. Many are largely confined to the use of a wheelchair, or cannot walk unaided for long periods of time without the use of a walking aid such as a walker or crutch.

Train companies must be informed in advance if you are a wheelchair user as they will have to organise wheelchair ramps to assist you on and off trains. Most stations are now full wheelchair accessible but it is a good idea to check this before you travel.

Airlines should also be notified in advance as you will need to be seated in a specially reserved seat at the front of the plane for ease of access and for emergency exit purposes.

The airline may also wish you to arrive in plenty of time to check in and board speedily. Airports also have special vehicles to help you move around the airport buildings more easily.

Most airlines will allow you to bring a walking stick on board the flight but double check this before you fly.

Please note that long haul flights can be strenuous even for a person in perfect health. Dehydration and deep vein thrombosis are real risks and precautions such as compression stockings should be used to minimise risk.

Hotel accommodation should also be thoroughly researched for ease of access for those of limited mobility.

Check that there are lifts and escalators and if possible request rooms on the ground floor. Many hotels also provide accommodation specially fitted with mobility bars and emergency alarms in case of distress.

Older people generally have less effective immune systems so it is not a good idea to plan a trip to an area with poor sanitation or high rates of infection. If you are on medication then you should check that the area you are travelling to has no restrictions on the medicines you need to bring.

Always bring plenty of medication for your trip and enough to cover delays or unexpected stops.

Keep medication in hand luggage in case of delays or loss of luggage.
