Organ Transplant

Organ transplanting is the act of replacing a malfunctioning organ with a functioning one from a donor.

The donor may be alive or brain dead.

Organs that can be successfully transplanted are:

Although attempts at organ transplantation have been going on for centuries, it is only in the 20th century that the practice became viable.

This is due to advances in surgical techniques but especially the understanding of organ rejection - whereby the body recognises the organ as an alien body and tries to neutralise it.

After a transplant operation, you will typically be prescribed medication to avoid or control organ rejection.

Please make sure you bring enough medication for your trip and always carry it in hand luggage in case of delay or loss of luggage.

Check with your doctor before travelling as to any precautions you should take while travelling, and if there are any activities you should not take part in.
