A Nut Allergy is caused when the immune system overreacts to an allergen, in this case nuts.
Travelling with a Nut Allergy:
When travelling, it is important to consider a number of factors for dealing with your nut allergy.
These include:
- Check with the airline before travel about their catering service.
- Look for an airline that doesn't serve nuts as a standard snack.
- Request a snack that does not contain nuts in advance.
- Tell all relevant personnel in advance of your condition.
- Carry adrenaline and any other medication necessary on you.
- Carry extra medication, in case of delay or emergency.
- If travelling with other people, separate the medication between your luggage, in case a bag gets lost or stolen.
- Keep on you a recent prescription and letter from your physician detailing your condition.
- Carry a list of emergency contacts.
- Keep your adrenaline shot is on you and not in luggage.
- Wipe your seat and any other surfaces your skin may touch that may have nut particles on it.
- Take your own food on the plane and always avoid airline food.
- Always check that your food does not contain nuts when on holiday.
- Always check with restaurant staff that the food does not contain nuts and inform them of your condition.
- Carry on you a dietary card translated into the language of the area you are holidaying in, detailing your restrictions.
