Nut Allergy:

A Nut Allergy is caused when the immune system overreacts to an allergen, in this case nuts.

Travelling with a Nut Allergy:

When travelling, it is important to consider a number of factors for dealing with your nut allergy.

These include:

  • Check with the airline before travel about their catering service.
  • Look for an airline that doesn't serve nuts as a standard snack.
  • Request a snack that does not contain nuts in advance.
  • Tell all relevant personnel in advance of your condition.
  • Carry adrenaline and any other medication necessary on you.
  • Carry extra medication, in case of delay or emergency.
  • If travelling with other people, separate the medication between your luggage, in case a bag gets lost or stolen.
  • Keep on you a recent prescription and letter from your physician detailing your condition.
  • Carry a list of emergency contacts.
  • Keep your adrenaline shot is on you and not in luggage.
  • Wipe your seat and any other surfaces your skin may touch that may have nut particles on it.
  • Take your own food on the plane and always avoid airline food.
  • Always check that your food does not contain nuts when on holiday.
  • Always check with restaurant staff that the food does not contain nuts and inform them of your condition.
  • Carry on you a dietary card translated into the language of the area you are holidaying in, detailing your restrictions.

Some of the questions asked when you are getting a quote for this condition are:

  • Are you at risk of life-threatening allergic reactions?
  • Have you needed hospital treatment for this in the last 2 years?

Symptoms:

If you come into contact with nuts, some of the symptoms you may experience include:

  • Nausea
  • Tingling of the face and mouth
  • Rash
  • Hives
  • Throat swelling
  • Asthma like symptoms
  • Increased heart rate

If you are travelling with others, we can include them on the policy, even if they do not have any pre existing medical conditions.
