Symptoms may appear and develop over a number of years. When MS is diagnosed, there are four main types:
Relapsing remitting
Sufferers will have occasional attacks followed by months or even years of no symptoms.
Secondary progressive
Most sufferers are diagnosed with relapsing remitting MS which will develop in to secondary progressive.
Primary progressive
This is categorised by a steadily increasing frequency of symptoms which accelerates over time.
Progressive relapsing
This is the least common type of MS.
There is currently no cure for MS but treatments tend to include medication and lifestyle factors.
Long term MS may result in sufferers becoming wheelchair users.
If you are travelling by train or plane then make sure you inform the travel company before you embark on your journey to ensure they have allocated ramps or reserved modified seating for you.
Ensure you take plenty of medication with you, and carry it in hand luggage in case of delay or lost luggage.
