JS Insurance provides Single Trip, Annual Multi Trip and Long Stay Travel Insurance to those who have Meningitis.

Meningitis is the swelling of the lining around the brain and spine. If you have had meningitis and wish to go on holiday, it is essential you purchase the correct travel insurance.

Travel Advice:

When planning to go on a holiday having suffered from meningitis, there are a number of things to consider.

Meningitis is often known as the Travellers Disease, as it can be easily contracted in certain areas abroad. It is essential that you get the correct vaccinations before leaving the country.

If you have already suffered from meningitis, you may wish to avoid certain areas that have a higher meningitis risk rate.

As well as this:

  • Make sure you first get confirmation from your doctor that it is safe for you to travel
  • Carry any medication you need with you, plus extras in case of delays or emergency
  • Do not plan long air travel if you have only just recovered
  • You may need to carry a certificate of health from your physician

If you require the use of a mobility aid

  • make sure you do not choose an area to travel to that will require climbing a number of steps or steep inclines
  • choose a hotel that has a lift
  • find accommodation that can accommodate your specific needs
  • plan a holiday that will not require you to over exert yourself.

If you have suffered from meningitis and wish to go on holiday, you will be asked a few questions when getting the quote to make sure you get the right travel insurance.

These will be:

  • Has treatment of the initial infection been completed?
  • Do you currently use any mobility aids?
  • Do you have epilepsy?
  • If awake, do you normally lose consciousness during a fit/seizure?

Symptoms and causes:

Meningitis is caused when the protective membranes covering the brain and spine become inflamed, usually as a result of an infection.

This infection is usually caused by viruses or bacteria, but can be caused by a fungal infection or by other pathogens. It may also develop following a serious injury to the head or spine.

The infection can be caused by bacteria or a virus, and it leads to the meninges becoming swollen. This can damage the nerves and brain.

There are two types of this medical condition:

  • Bacterial - This is very serious. Someone suffering from this needs to be treated urgently and get antibiotics immediately. The sooner effective treatment is given, the more likely a full recovery will be made.
  • If left untreated, severe brain damage can be caused as well as an infection of the blood.
  • Viral - Is more common and less serious. It is usually treated with pain killers. Most people make a full recovery within a couple of weeks without being admitted to hospital.

Symptoms of Meningitis:

  • severe headache
  • vomiting
  • a temperature of 38 Degree Celsius or over
  • stiff neck
  • sensitivity to light
  • a skin rash
