Kidney Stones:

Kidney Stones are crystals made up of salts and minerals (such as calcium). They form in the kidney when there is too much waste in too little urine. After a Kidney Stone is formed the stone may stay in the kidney or travel down the urinary tract into the ureter. The stone will gradually get larger unless it is passed out of the body in the urine.

Travel Advice:

It is essential that you purchase a comprehensive travel insurance policy. Inform the policy provider that you suffer from Kidney Stones so you are covered if you require medical treatment while away. If travelling in Europe be sure to take your European Health Insurance Card.

Make enquiries as to where you can receive medical assistance at your destination in case of emergency.

If you have been prescribed medication remember to take enough to cover the entirety of the trip. Remember to take plenty painkillers with you and keep them in your hand luggage while you are flying in case you require them. It is important to stay hydrated at all times and to avoid alcoholic and caffeinated drinks.

When getting a travel insurance quote for kidney stones, you will be asked a number of questions to make sure that you get the right quote for you. These will be:

• Do you have any kidney stones at the moment?
• How many attacks of renal colic have you had in the last 2 years?
• Is the function of your kidneys impaired?
• Are you on dialysis?
• How many unplanned hospital admissions for this problem have you had in the last year?

If you are travelling with others, we can include them on the policy even if they do not have any pre existing medical conditions.
