Kidney Infection

A kidney infection (medical term pyelonephritis) is when a bacterial infection moves up the bladder or urethra and into one of the kidneys.

The urethra is the tube that runs from the bladder through the penis or vulva. Urine is passed through the urethra.

Normally only one kidney gets infected - the kidney's job is to filter out waste products from the blood before turning it into urine.

Symptoms include:

  • High temperature
  • Abdominal pain
  • Pain when urinating
  • Rigors
  • Headache
  • Vomiting
  • Delirium
  • Diarrhoea

The signs of a kidney infection are not easy to recognize unless you suffer regulary.

There are two main types of kidney infection:

  • Uncomplicated kidney infection
  • Complicated kidney infection

Uncomplicated kidney infections are when a person with an otherwise healthy urinary tract and immune system become infected by common bacteria.

Complicated infections are when the bacteria is much more complex and does not respond to treatment with anti-biotics.

Diagnosis will most commonly take the form of x-rays and ultrasound.

You are more at risk of kidney infection if:

  • You have been recently fitted with a catheter
  • You have had kidney stones
  • You have had urinary tract stents or drainage procedures
  • You are pregnant or have recently had a pregnancy
  • You are suffering from prostate disease
  • You are diabetic
  • You are in an immunocompromised state
  • You have changed sexual partners in the last year
  • You have a family history of urinary tract infections

1 in 10 people will suffer from a kidney infection sometime in their life. And they are more common in women than in men, pregnant woman elderly and people over the age of 60 and in young children under 2.

If left untreated kidney infections are dangerous as they can cause blood poisoning, loss of a kidney or even death if it gets bad.

You can still travel with kidney infections. However, if you are experiencing a lot of pain and discomfort then flying or long hours of travelling would not be a good idea to undertake.

Make sure you keep any medication in your hand luggage in case of long delays and loss of luggage.

If you are travelling to a different time zone then be sure to adjust the times you take your medication. Ask to be seated near to a bathroom as you should relieve yourself promptly should the need arise.

If you are travelling with others, we can include them on the policy even if they do not have any pre existing medical conditions.

We recommend that you read the Terms and Conditions for the full details of our Travel Insurance policy.
