Internal Cardiac Defibrillator:

An Internal Cardiac Defibrillator is a device that is put in the body to monitor and correct any abnormal heart rhythms. They are usually given to people who are at high risk of cardiac arrest or have arrhythmia problems.

Travel Advice:

If you suffer from a heart condition and have had an internal cardiac defibrillator there are some things to take into consideration before travel.

Check with your physician prior to travel to ensure it is safe for you to go on holiday.

There is nothing to suggest that air travel should unduly affect a defibrillator or pace maker. However, alert the airline of your condition prior to travel, as it is possible that the defibrillator may set off the metal detector alarms in security.

Do not put unnecessary strain on your heart. Areas at a high altitude or a considerably cold climate will both put undue strain on the heart, causing the arteries to constrict and the heart to work harder.

Similarly, activities such as scuba diving, bungee jumping or sky diving can also put excess pressure on your heart.

Check with your physician before your holiday if you want to partake in any exercise or activities you are not already doing on a regular basis at home.

It is important to first purchase travel insurance before leaving the country.
