One of the main dangers of ice fishing is the quality of the ice that anglers are fishing on.

The recommended thickness of ice for walking on is 4 inches, but anglers do go out on ice as thin as 2.5 inches.

Warm weather spells, off shore winds and currents can all affect the quality of the ice and how it forms, making it thinner, softer or even causing areas to break away, leaving anglers at risk of falling through or stranded.

Many cars, trucks, fish houses and SUVs also all fall through the ice each year.

As well as this, over exposure to the harsh weather conditions means that frostbite is a risk for anglers.

There is also the threat of carbon monoxide poisoning from the fumes generated from fish house heaters.

Single Trip: 6 months maximum duration (60-69 year olds: 3 months). Annual Multi-Trip: 60 days maximum duration.
