Heart Transplantation

Heart transplantation is the removal of a damaged heart and replacement with a new, healthy heart from a donor.

A heart transplant is the last resort for people with end stage heart failure or coronary artery disease.

There are several reasons why you would not be eligible for a heart transplant. These include:

• Advance age
• Kidney disease
• Lung disease
• Liver disease
• Poor circulation
• Alcohol, tobacco or drug abuse
• Tendency to ignore medical advice
• Cancer

You could be on a waiting list for years while waiting for a new heart. You will need to be matched with someone of a similar tissue type as you.

After the operation survival rates are on average 15 years. There are however a number of complications that can arise. These include:

• Failure to pump blood effectively
• Organ rejection
• Infection
• Narrowing of arteries

Organ rejection occurs when the body sees the new heart as a 'threat' and aims to neutralise it. This means that you will be put on immunosuppressant medication to combat this.

• How long ago was your heart transplant?
• Have you been treated for rejection in the last twelve months?
• Check with your Doctor before planning a holiday. Strenuous physical activity should be avoided during your trip.
• Always carry enough medication for the length of your trip and carry medication in hand luggage in case of delays or loss of luggage.
