Heart Disease is a general term that refers to a variety of mild and severe medical conditions that affect 1 or more parts of the heart.
Travel Advice:
It is essential to purchase travel insurance if you suffer from any type of heart disease before you leave the country.
If you do suffer from heart disease and are planning a holiday, there are a number of things to consider.
- Do not fly if you have suffered from a heart attack in the last two weeks
- Do not fly f you are in an unstable condition
- Do not fly if you have had coronary surgery in the last three weeks
- Do not fly if you have had a coronary artery stent placement in the last two weeks
- Avoid alcohol
- Do not over exert yourself
- Wear compression stocking and move your legs around during the flight
- Keep yourself hydrated
- Plan a relaxed holiday, such as a cruise
- Carry enough medication with you for the entire trip, plus extra in case of emergency
- Carry a recent prescription with you
- Carry details of your medical condition, plus ICE contact numbers on you
When obtaining a travel insurance quote, you will be asked a number of questions to help ensure you get the right quote for you. These will be:
- Have you ever had a heart bypass, an angioplasty or a coronary stent?
- Have you ever been a smoker?
- How long ago was your most recent procedure?
- At any time BEFORE your most recent heart procedure, did you suffer a heart attack?
- Have you EVER had any symptoms of angina (eg chest pain, chest tightness) since your last procedure?
- Have you had a heart attack at any time AFTER your angioplasty or stenting?
- How many (if any) coronary stents do you have?
- Can you always walk 200 yards on the flat without becoming short of breath?
- Have you been advised to take medication for high blood pressure?
- Have you been advised to take medication to lower your cholesterol?
Types of Heart Disease: There are lots of different types of heart disease:
- Cardiomyopathy
- Heart failure
- Congenital heart disease
- Heart valve disease
Symptoms of heart disease:
- Chest pain ( angina),
- Shortness of breath,
- Swollen ankles,
- Tiredness and fatigue,
- Irregular heart beat and
- A blue tinge to the lips or finger tips.
Risk factors:
- Age-most people who suffer with heart disease are over 65.
- Men are more at risk than women,
- Inherited- family history of heart disease,
- Smoking,
- Large regular alcohol consume,
- High cholesterol levels and
- High blood pressure.
If you are travelling with others, we can include them on the policy even if they do not have any pre existing medical conditions.
