Fell Walking

Fell walking is the act of walking on hills and mountains. This is an umbrella term that can include mountaineering, trekking, rambling or hiking.

Popular areas for fell walking include:

  • Lake District
  • Peak District
  • Yorkshire Dales
  • Quantock Hills
  • Exmoor
  • Snowdonia
  • Black Mountains
  • Brecon Beacons
  • Dartmoor
  • Scottish Highlands
  • Ben Nevis

Essential equipment for fell walking includes:

  • Waterproof laminated map
  • Torch
  • Knife
  • Warm clothing
  • Waterproof clothing
  • Compass
  • Whistle
  • First aid kit
  • Mobile phone

Common injuries from fell walking include:

  • Blisters
  • Black toenails
  • Strains
  • Sprains
  • Stress Fractures

Make sure you have proper walking boots with enough support to aid your walk. New boots are not recommended as these are more likely to cause blisters.

Climbing to very high altitudes can induce altitude sickness.

Symptoms include:

  • Dizziness
  • Nausea
  • Fatigue
  • Lack of appetite
  • Aching muscles

If these signs are exhibited then rest straight away before attempting to climb to a slightly lower altitude.

Altitude sickness may in some cases progress to High Altitude Cerebral Edema or High Altitude Pulmonary Edema. Both of these can be fatal within 24 hours.
