European Health Insurance Card
The European Health Insurance Card allows anyone from an EU country that is covered by a state healthcare programme to receive free or discounted healthcare in another EU country.
Participating Countries are:
Introduced in 2005, the European Health Insurance Card replaced a number of medical insurance forms, such as:
Anybody over the age of 16 is entitled to a card. If you have children or dependents under the age of 16, you have to apply for a card on their behalf. All members of your travelling party must have their own EHIC card.
If you lose your card you can call 0845 605 0707 from the UK, or +44 191 212 7500 if you are calling from abroad.
A European Health Insurance Card does not replace Travel Insurance and you are advised to have both forms of protection. The EHIC does not cover dental work or repatriation costs, for example.
