Cystic Lung Disease

Cystic lung disease is when tiny pockets of air or fluid develop on the lungs.

Symptoms include:

  • Shortness of breath
  • Wheezing
  • Coughing
  • Recurrent pneumonia

There are four categories of the disease:

  • Bronchogenic cysts

This cyst is usually found in the esophagus or trachea. Infected cysts can affect the function of the airway.

  • Cystic adenomatoid malformation

This is overgrowth of lung tissue that forms into cysts.

  • Lobar emphysema

This is an obstruction in the lung that traps the airflow, leading to cyst development.

  • Pulmonary sequestration

This is a mass of lung tissue unconnected to the airways and can be found inside or outside the lung.

Cysts can be present at birth as a developmental abnormality but are more often the result of infection or complications from other diseases.

Cystic lung disease is usually treated by a surgical procedure. This can range from minimally invasive keyhole surgery to a lobectomy, where part of the lung is removed.

Medical Check

Questions you may be asked when applying for travel insurance include:

  • How long ago was the date of onset of your breathing problem?
  • How many medicines do you take for your respiratory condition (count each inhaler as one medicine)?
  • How many hospital admissions have you had for your respiratory condition in the last year?
  • Have you needed treatment in an intensive care unit for this condition?
  • Can you always walk 200yds on the flat without becoming short of breath?
  • Have you ever been prescribed oxygen for use at home?
  • Have you ever been a smoker?

You should consult your Doctor when planning on travelling, especially if you want to fly somewhere.

The difference in air pressure when flying can have a significant impact on those suffering from lung disease. Effects can be coughing or wheezing, or can be much more serious depending on the severity of your disease.

You should also inform your airline before you travel of your condition and any special requirements you may have.
