Cystic Kidney Disease

Cystic kidney disease is when the kidneys begin to develop fluid filled sacs called cysts. It is more common in people that have been on dialysis for many years.

The kidneys help to filter waste from the body and this produces urine. They also help to regulate blood pressure and calcium in the bones.

Cystic kidney disease often presents with no symptoms, however some these may be:

• Fever
• Back pain
• Chills
• Blood in urine
• Low blood pressure

If cystic kidney disease is suspected, there are several diagnostic tools that a Doctor can use. These include:

• Ultrasound
• Computerised tomography
• Magnetic resonance imaging scan
• Complete blood count
• Renal biopsy

There is unfortunately no cure for cystic kidney disease. The primary phase of treatment involves managing the illness, so as the patient loses water and sodium they will need to drink a lot of fluids and take sodium tablets.

As the disease progresses you may develop kidney failure. You may be put on medication, followed by kidney dialysis and the possible need for kidney transplant.

• If you are planning on travelling then consult your Doctor beforehand.
