Colitis
Colitis is an inflammation of the colon.
The colon is the large intestine or bowel which is responsible for collecting and storing the waste products of digestion.
Colitis is when the colon becomes inflamed and in severe cases, ulcers which can be very painful may form on the lining of the colon. These ulcers can bleed and produce mucus and pus.
The symptoms of the condition are depending on the cause if the colitis and on how much the colon is affected. But normally you will get abdominal pain and diarrhoea.
Other symptoms may include:
Symptoms can be mild to very severe and can flare up and then disappear for months or even years.
The condition affects only 10 in 100,000 a year so is not particularly common. It usually develops between the ages of 15 and 30 in both men and women.
There are several different types of colitis:
The cause for colitis is unknown. But researchers believe there are a number of factors involved which include viruses, genetic, air pollution, diet and hygiene.
Treatment varies depending on the type of colitis you are diagnosed with.
Some types of colitis can be cleared up with anti-biotics, while other more severe cases may require surgery.
As colitis can result in the need for increased bowel movements, make sure that while you are travelling you are situated close to a bathroom.
If you are flying and have specific dietary requirements then make sure you have told the airline well in advance of travelling.
Keep any medication in your hand luggage in case of long delays or loss of luggage.
Beware that some medications can make you more sensitive to the sun, so if you are travelling somewhere warm then please use sunscreen with an appropriate SPF.
If you are travelling with others, we can include them on the policy even if they do not have any pre existing medical conditions.
