Coaches are designed for very long journeys so are fully equipped with toilet facilities.
Sitting in a coach for long periods of time increases the risk of deep vein thrombosis. This is when clots form in the veins, usually in the leg, and cause swelling and poor circulation. In extreme cases they can cause coronary thrombosis. This is where the clot travels to the heart and causes heart attack.
This is caused by a combination of the lack of mobility and severe dehydration during a long haul flight.
People who are more at risk include the elderly, pregnant women, those with existing illnesses such as cancer, and people that have had recent orthopaedic surgery.
If you are taking a flight, bus or train journey which will last longer than four hours then you may wish to invest in some compression tights which are proven to reduce the risk of DVT.
Make sure you stay hydrated during your journey and avoid alcohol and caffeine.
