JS Insurance provides Single Trip, Annual Multi Trip and Long Stay Travel Insurance to those who have Cellulitis.

Cellulitis (not to be confused with Cellulite) is a common, non-contagious bacterial skin infection that affects the deep layers of the skin and the layer of fat under the skin.

Causes of Cellulitis:

Several types of bacteria live on the surface of the skin and dont usually cause any harm. However following a cut, graze, or bite the bacteria may pass into the skin and cause an infection and inflammation. The bacteria could also enter the skin via skin conditions such as eczema and athletes foot.

The infected area can become swollen, red in colour, hot, tender and painful. Blisters may also develop on the skin. Cellulitis could also cause symptoms such as fever, nausea, shivering and chills. The lymph glands may become swollen as the body attempts to stop the infection spreading around the body. Most cases are effectively treated with antibiotics, but occasionally hospital treatment is required.

Treatments:

Cellulitis can usually be treated orally with antibiotics. If the condition has become very serious a hospital stay may be necessary, but usually the condition can be treated fully with antibiotics.

Travel Advice:

While away prevent infections by keeping cuts, grazes and bites clean. Wash damaged skin with clean water and apply an antiseptic cream. Keep the wound covered to create a barrier to bacteria and change the dressing if it becomes dirty or wet.

If you have an itchy skin condition keep your fingernails short to reduce the chance of causing an infection by breaking the skin as you scratch. Wash hands regularly. Keep dry skin moisturised to prevent cracking through which bacteria could enter.

If the infection is very painful or getting noticeably worse consult a doctor to prevent complications or the infection spreading to other areas. Complications can include permanent swelling, septicaemia or gangrene.

When getting a quote for travel insurance with cellulitis, you will be asked a number of questions to ensure you are getting the right quote for you. These include:

  • How many episodes of cellulitis requiring hospital treatment have you had?
  • Are you still being treated for cellulitis?

If you are travelling with others, we can include them on the policy even if they do not have any pre existing medical conditions.
