JS Insurance provides Single Trip, Annual Multi Trip and Long Stay Travel Insurance to those who have an Artificial Valve.

An artificial valve is needed when one of the four valves in the heart stops working and needs to be replaced.

The valves control and regulate the flow of blood through the heart.

The four valves in the heart are:

• Aortic valve
• Mitral valve
• Tricuspid valve
• Pulmonary valve

A wide range of heart diseases may result in the need for valve replacement, such as:

• Aortic stenosis
• Rheumatic fever
• Calcification
• Valve infection or inflammation
• Enlargement of the aorta

Replacement valves are either tissue or mechanical.

Tissue valves are traditionally taken from pigs and have a lifespan of around 15 years.

Mechanical valves have been tested to theoretically last hundreds of years. However, there is a much greater risk of blood clotting with mechanical valves.

Patients must therefore take anti coagulant drugs to avoid this happening.

It is important to take a plentiful supply of medication when you travel.

Always carry medication in hand luggage in case of delays or loss of luggage.

Medical Check

There are certain questions you may be asked when seeking travel insurance.

Have you ever been a smoker?

Is further investigation or treatment planned?

Have you had any disturbance of your heart rhythm?

Have you had an ablation procedure?

How many unplanned hospital visits have you had in the last 12 months?

Are you on medication to thin the blood (not including aspirin) which requires regular blood tests?

Have you ever been told that the arteries in your heart are blocked or narrowed?

Have you ever had angina and/or a heart attack?

Have you been prescribed any treatment for heart-related breathlessness or ankle swelling?

Have you ever had a stroke or a mini-stroke (TIA)?

If you are travelling with others, we can include them on the policy, even if they do not have any pre existing medical conditions.
