Aplastic Anemia

Aplastic anemia is a disorder of the blood where the bone marrow does not produce enough new cells to replenish the blood stream.

Symptoms include:

• Fatigue
• Weakness
• Shortness of breath
• Pale complexion
• Bruising easily
• Haemorrhage
• Headaches
• Jaundice
• Increased susceptibility to infection

In the majority of cases there is no known cause, however some patients may already have underlying auto immune disorders.

Methods of diagnosis include:

• Blood tests
• Liver function tests
• Bone marrow biopsy
• Ultrasound imaging tests
• Chest x-ray

Once aplastic anemia has been diagnosed, it can be treated fairly successfully with a good prognosis.

Untreated aplastic anemia can cause death within six months.

Treatments include:

• Blood transplants
• Bone marrow transplants
• Immune suppressant medicines
• Mild chemotherapy

If you are travelling with this condition there are a number of things to take into account.

People with a low red blood cell count should avoid doing excessive or overly strenuous activity as they can suffer from shortness of breath and increased heart rate.

For this reason it is also recommended that you do not travel to very high altitudes as the oxygen is thinner.

Due to having a lowered immune system, it is not recommended that sufferers travel to places with low sanitation or adequate hygienic facilities.

Flying with aplastic anemia should not be a problem, however please consult your Doctor before you travel.

Any medication should be carried in hand luggage in case of delay or loss of luggage.
