JS Insurance provides Single Trip, Annual Multi Trip and Long Stay Travel Insurance to those who have AIDS.

HIV attacks and impairs your immune system, leaving your body much more vulnerable to risk of disease and infection. The risk to you if you are travelling with AIDS or HIV is not influenced so much by the region you are travelling to but the way you act whilst you are there.

Activities which will put you at high risk whilst travelling include:

  • Having unprotected sex,
  • Sharing needles, syringes, razors or toothbrushes,
  • Exposure to unsterilized needles for tattooing, body-piercing or acupuncture,
  • Receiving a blood transfusion or organ transplantation if the traveller is in a country that does not adequately screen the blood/organ supply for HIV.

By avoiding contaminated syringes and needles, unprotected sex and having a blood transfusion or organ transplantation, whilst travelling will seriously increase your safety whilst travelling. Heavy drinking and/or taking drugs can also reduce your inhibitions and make you more likely to indulge in behaviour which could put you at risk.

Should you need a blood transfusion or transplant whilst travelling, try to ensure the blood/organ has been properly screened for HIV.

If you require the use of needles or syringes, it is important that you make sure you carry enough with you for the duration of your travel as it may be difficult to purchase them whilst abroad. Make sure you carry with you at all times an explanation from your health care provider or a certificate so you do not get into any trouble for carrying needles or syringes with you, as this could otherwise be an issue in certain countries. Check the security and screening regulations of the country you are travelling before you leave though, so you are aware of their most recent policies and are able to get the correct documents.

You should also check the policy of the airline you are travelling with regarding carrying needles and syringes on you before travelling.

Make sure you contact a doctor or health care provider up to six weeks before travelling to ensure you are well enough to undertake travel.

Treatment of AIDS depends on the individual but some of the most common treatments are:

  • Nucleoside reverse transcriptase inhibitors (NRTIs) or nucleotide reverse transcriptase inhibitors (NtRTIs)
  • Non-nucleoside reverse transcriptase inhibitors (NNRTIs)
  • Protease inhibitors (PIs)
  • Fusion and entry inhibitors
  • Integrase inhibitors (INIs)

Questions you will be asked when you are getting a quote for this condition are:

  • In the last three months have you started a new antiviral drug or is a new drug planned?
  • What is your latest CD4 count?
  • If you have been on antiviral treatment for more than three months, what is your latest viral load?
  • Have you been advised to start antiviral treatment but chosen not to?
