Three ludicrous insurance claims

The world’s axis is burdened under the pressure of scam artists’, loan sharks, newest quick profit schemes. Fraud is one of the most respected professions on the planet, and one that takes a lot of skill, an uncanny ability to lie, and continents full of unsuspecting suckers.

Some people will do anything to make a quick buck. Never mind the old elbow grease; just use a little grease on the forms, and you’re sure to make a few pounds quickly and efficiently. Now, for many that’s not a problem. If you aren’t caught, who cares, right? Unfortunately, it doesn’t always work.

Let’s look at a few cases where the claims didn’t go as expected.

Burning down the house

An insurance company received a claim of 72,000 pounds for a house that was severely damaged by fire. Hmm, that happens, right? Something catches fire by accident, and the next thing your house is a heap of smouldering ashes. The only problem with this claim, at closer inspection, was that there was no forced entry. The fire was clearly a case of arson, as evidenced by the container of highly flammable liquid found near the fireplace. Another indicator of a planned scam was that the owner of the house had sold new furniture not long before the fire, and replaced it with old furniture. This thing smells of old haddock, never mind sounds fishy. To top his artistic endeavour off, it was found that the man had removed his two cars from the driveway the very night of the “accident”.

“Certainly sir. We’ll pay out immediately. It’s completely understandable that everything falls in place for a rock solid arson case, but you look like such a lovely, trustworthy man. There’s no way we’ll deny you. Oh yes, of course, people leave petrol tanks by the fireplace all the time. I do it too! We understand.”

Pet Cemetery

A man was putting in claims of thousands of pounds against the deaths of several pedigree animals. Of course, the insurance company thought things smelled a little offish, and decided to investigate. Their senses did not let them down. It turns out the man was acquiring dead animals and storing them up in a freezer. He wasn’t picky. He bought some dead animals, while others were simply road kill; a real stylish operator.  While his pets were freezing their dead behinds off, he’s take out insurance policies against them, and then wait a while before trying to cash in.

The High Flyer

A bright, hard-working, honest woman submitted a receipt of 200 pounds for the printing of flyers for her Yorkshire terrier, which the flyer claimed was lost. At closer examination, it was revealed that the receipt had mysteriously received an extra zero somewhere along the way from the newsagent to her submitting it. As if that’s not enough, the lady submitted another claim six months later, much along the same lines as the first. This superstar even used the same receipt. However, let’s give her some credit; the dog’s name was altered slightly.

It’s clear to see that fraud is a difficult game. Only the best of the best can survive in such a cutthroat business. It’s no place for amateurs.

Independent Traveller Cover

Wednesday, October 7th, 2009

JS Insurance launches New Independent Travellers Insurance for growing market of ‘go-it-alone’ holidaymakers

Despite the increasing economic gloom, the holiday season is approaching and millions of Brits will be preparing to travel abroad over the winter months. But AXA warns that increasing numbers of people arranging their own holidays may be leaving themselves exposed despite taking out travel insurance.

Over the last few years the number of Independent Travellers has overtaken the number of Package Holiday Travellers. Internet access and low-cost airlines have helped escalate this trend – in 2006 over 16 million Independent Travellers headed overseas for holidays between November and March.

However, insurance provision has not kept pace with the changing profile of the British holidaymaker and Independent Travellers can find that there are gaps in their insurance cover which AXA are addressing with their Independent Travellers Cover extension.

The new product is available with the AXA Superplus and AXA Annual Policies (with or without Winter Sports Cover).

It covers travellers for a number of areas such as problems with flight cancellations or delays, missed connections or the customer being denied boarding.

With a package holiday the tour operator or travel agent is required to make suitable alternative arrangements, such as the provision of alternative flights due to the regulations that they operate under. No such protection is given to Independent Travellers, hence the need for this new cover launched by AXA.

The additional cover offered by this product includes:

- Cancellation or curtailment costs or expenses if the FCO issue a directive prohibiting travel to or recommending evacuation from your destination forcing you to cancel or curtail your trip. In such situations those on a package holiday would have had their holiday rearranged by their tour operator/agent, whereas independent travellers would have been reimbursed by the airline for their flight but any other expenses such as accommodation, transfers and excursions would not be covered by standard travel insurance.

- Delayed departure compensation payable for delays exceeding 5 hours occurring at the departure point of any connecting flights on both the outbound and return journeys.

- Cancellation costs if you cancel your trip, or additional expenses to reach your destination because your flight from the UK was cancelled, delayed for more than 5 hours or you were denied boarding due to the flight being overbooked

- Additional expenses to reach your destination if you are delayed and miss any onward connecting flights or other public transport

- Unused accommodation costs or additional expenses if your trip is affected by insolvency of the accommodation providers, natural disasters such as fire, flood, earthquake or an outbreak of food poisoning or an infectious disease affecting your accommodation or resort.

Independent Traveller Insurance

New Independent Traveller Cover

JS Insurance is now offering Independent Traveller Cover, which is available as an option on their single trip travel insurance policies and on their Annual multi trip policies.

The public are now choosing to make their own travel arrangements without realising that they may not be fully covered if anything goes wrong.

If the consumer books their holiday independently, rather than as a package, their insurance may not give them adequate cover.

The definition of a package means the pre-arranged combination of at least two of the following components, when sold or offered for sale at an inclusive price and when the service covers a period of more than 24 hours.

This includes overnight accommodation, transport or other tourist services (such as car hire or airport parking) accounting for a significant proportion of the package.

The benefits of this cover for the consumer are:

Extended Cancellation or curtailment charges

This includes cover for cancellation or curtailment if the Foreign & Commonwealth Office issues a directive prohibiting all travel to or recommending evacuation from your destination. The trip costs will be reimbursed if you cancel, or if you have already travelled then repatriation costs and curtailment can be claimed for. An example of where this cover could help is Hurricane Katrina hitting New Orleans.

Extended Delayed Departure

The existing delay benefit under our policy is payable after 12 hours delay to the initial international journey to and from the UK. Independent Traveller cover also pays for delays occurring at the departure point of any connecting public transport both on the outbound and return journeys. In addition, you now have the option to cancel your trip or to be reimbursed for alternative transport and additional accommodation costs, if the public transport on which you are departing the UK is delayed for over 12 hours. Also, if the public transport is cancelled or you are denied boarding due to the flight being overbooked you may cancel your trip. You have the option to either accept a refund or arrange for an alternative flight for which we will reimburse the difference. Alternatively, you can cancel your entire trip and be reimbursed for your flights, accommodation and transfers.

Extended Missed Departure

There is cover for additional accommodation and travel expenses incurred to reach your destination or return to the UK, if you fail to arrive at the departure point in time to board any onward connecting public transport including connections within the UK on the return journey.

So if you miss your onward connection due to delays, we’ll help you with your accommodation and travel expenses.

Extended Accommodation Cover

Cover is now provided for any irrecoverable unused accommodation costs and charges which have been paid or are due if you were not able to travel and use your booked accommodation; as a result of the insolvency of the providers of the accommodation, fire, flood, earthquake, avalanche, hurricane, storm or an outbreak of food poisoning affecting your accommodation or resort.
